  • June News

    Dear Members and Friends,

Today I delivered 28 overflowing large trolleys filled with all sorts of non-perishable food and personal items to the Manly Community Centre for distribution across the winter and into spring and next summer to the Northern Beaches’ homeless, women’s refuge, disadvantaged and migrant families. Love to see the children’s faces when they are given a slab of chocolate to share with their brothers and sisters.

Thank you to all Manly Lions and friends who helped over the weekend and last Thursday and Friday evenings to make this Lions Project of “feeding the hungry” so successful.

Thank you also to the Woolworths supermarket staff, many of who joined in the giving of food. Our Northern Beaches food run is one of our biggest service projects and you all can be very proud of what we achieve in helping the disadvantaged on the Northern Beaches.

I have updated the “Schedule of Forthcoming Events” for the next months.

SATURDAY 17th JUNE – Manly Lions Market BBQ at Manly Village P School Canteen, 7am to 3pm. Contact – Nigel Jeny nigeljeny@hotmail.com

Please email me the times you prefer to help this Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed & toes for a fine day. The Allambie Scouts will be there in the morning helping setting up and in the afternoon to help wash up and put things away in our BBQ Trailer. Come and help out and chat with fellow Lions and friends.

Please see the photos of this fantastic initiative.

THURSDAY 6th JULY 7pm – Get Together meal, as last month’s get together at Pittwater RSL Bistro was popular and the food was excellent, we have decided to go there again for July.

We have started our Circus Quirkus for 2017, the shows have been scheduled for THURSDAY 13th JULY (shows at 11am and 2pm) and SATURDAY 26th AUGUST (shows at 11am, 2pm, 5pm) at the Wesley Conference Centre, 220 Pitt St Sydney CBD. We need Manly Lions and friends to assist children/families to their seats and manage pram parking.

Please give your name and attending shows to Conny.

THURSDAY 7th SEPTEMBER - KEEP IT FREE – MARK IT IN YOUR DIARY NOW. District Governor Ron Gattone will visit the Lions Clubs of Manly and Pittwater at a combined dinner meeting. We have booked the Balgowlah RSL 30-38 Ethel St, Seaforth Function Centre and will have a lovely Buffet Menu including seafood for $35 per person. Drinks are at Club prices. Children are most welcome and are free of charge.

I know I say you can pick and choose the Manly Lions events you attend; however, a District Governor’s visit is a very important event in the life of a club. We have a Club to be proud of which is something to show the DG. I should like to have all our Lions members and friends at Balgowlah RSL on the 7th September to give our new members a welcoming Lions kit and Lions lapel pin to be presented by the DG. We can show DG Ron our commitment to our community – local, national and global.

Please confirm your attendance to Genevieve or myself.

We will make it a fun evening.

Having great success in getting local restaurants and clubs to join us in collecting corks and wine bottle aluminium screw caps. They organise boxes under the bars and when filled they telephone for the hundreds of caps to be collected by a Manly Lion.

We are continuing to collect used spectacles that are sent to the Lions Glasses Recycle Centre in Brisbane for cleaning, grading and labelling. They are then repacked and sent to PNG, Timor Leste, Pacific Islands and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities. We have several collection points, including optometrists and medical centres, but can always do with more.

We have decided to hold our Circus Quirkus 2016 distribution of donation meeting in late July or early August. We raised $71,534.85. Last year Manly Lions were able to support over 60 groups, schools, nippers and Lions Projects.

Our two major beneficiaries Cystic Fibrous Clinic at Westmead Children’s Hospital and the Australian Lions Children Mobility Foundation each receive $17,883.50 leaving a balance of $35,767.00 to be distributed.

On the same evening, we will hold our AGM, that usually takes several minutes.

Look forwarding to catching up at this Saturday’s Market BBQ before we fly to Chicago for Lions 100th Birthday Party.

    Best Regards

    Nigel

Cystic Fibrosis Information Night And Donations Presentation

In May The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Cystic Fibrosis Clinic held an information night which gave the Clubs in our District the opportunity to present their donations in person to the head of the Clinic, Dr. Peter Cooper and to hear from clinical staff and other Lions.

Five Clubs presented their cheques and four other Clubs sent donations to make a total of $12,410. Thank you all for your generosity.

Those attending learned that research has produced a new drug that, although still under trial, has proved to be very beneficial to some patients. We need help to keep our young patients alive until this drug becomes generally available.

    Lions World Lunch Relay

Lions Clubs International is helping to feed the hungry of the world
Lions Club of Manly participated in the Lions World Lunch Relay that kicked off on Friday 4th April 2014 at noon in New Zealand.

At midday local time, Lions Clubs around the world, in Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, Iceland, Canada, the USA and South America hosted lunches in different international time zones. The Lunch Relay moved from time zone to time zone as Lions steadily passed the event around the world, forming the Lions World Lunch Relay.

Manly Lions had their lunch at the Manly Community Centre where they offered a light lunch for $5. More importantly, Manly Lions had advertised in the Manly Daily and on facebook that they would collect non-perishable foods on the day to be given to the Manly Community Centre who provide food to the homeless and struggling families within our Northern Beaches community. LCI are offering a prize to the Lions Club that collects the most food items. Manly Lions hope they are a winner! Everyone had a great time and the Manly Community Centre was so grateful for all the donated food.
